Sukhmani, also called the psalm of peace, is one of the longer compositions of the fifth Nanak, Guru Arjan, and also one of the most beloved and most recited by Sikhs. Consisting of 24 saloks, each followed by an Astpadi, Sukhmani instructs the mind on how to find lasting peace by connecting with that all-pervasive Essence, Ik Oan-kar, which is at the root of the universe. It is known through Its Word or Wisdom also called Naam.

Hukam can be viewed as the polar opposite of Haumai. Hukam refers to the Will of God or the order of Universe. Where Haumai creates an illusory sense of separateness (ego-consciousness), Hukam aligns the mind with universal or eco-consciousness. In Sikhi, the goal of life os to life in accord with Hukam.

Naam is the spinal concept in Sikhi but defies explanation. In this podcast, we will see how Naam represents the highest good, divine knowledge as well as the means to obtain that knowledge.

Munn or Mind in Sikhi, like Haumai, has a bi-polar nature. The mind as haumai (ego-consciousness) and the mind as a reflection of the divine. The drama of human life is to persuade the ego-mind to cross its boundaries and unite with its other Self. In this podcast, we will use Gurbani to understand this process.

In Sikhi, Haumai is the existential problem to be solved - a chronic disease which carries the seeds of its own cure. With Gurbani as our backdrop, we will examine the nature of Haumai and attempt to answer questions such as: how does haumai come into existence, its nature and how to break the illusion of separateness it creates.

Laavan is a set of four compositions of the fourth Nanak, Guru Ramdas that are especially recited as an essential part of a Sikh marriage or Anand Karaj. Laavan means to bind together and uses the metaphor of the individual soul’s union with the Divine to instruct the bride and bridegroom to orient themselves in the right way to achieve marital bliss.
